LOVE IN TIME OF FACEBOOK

18 Aug

July 14, 2009 – Tuesday

Recently I read a story about a couple who met, dated and even got engaged on Facebook…… Without ever meeting each other ! ……………… Technology has effectively managed to extinguish the age of silent flirting, holding hands, love letters and the likes of……….. We are in an era where the whole concept of flirting means poking each other on facebook or updating ones status………………..Networking sites are making the world a global village but it is seriously eating into the healthy idea of interpersonal communication……………. or rather Face-to-Face communication……………. And webcam does not count………………..Facebook, Orkut, Myspace et al give you the advantage of being some one you are not……………….. Jason X a 24 yr old surfer dude with a hot bod and blue eyes is most likely Ambii—– an 18yr old pimple faced geek from interior chennai who has a stammer………………While nothing may be wrong with him per say, Networking sites allow us the pleasure of never having to get over our social insecurities…………….

Communication has become a pseudonym for the internet and the process of falling in love is lost………….People fall in love with the projected identity of a person without having to bear the risk and embarassment of actually facing that person and making an old fashioned approach to love…………..Email, IM and chat help us craft witty and interesting statements………….They give us the liberty of time thereby allowing us to sound as charming as we like…………..Or rather as charming as we can think of……………….A lot of people go through life without experiencing romance………….However what is of concern are the fact that emotions itself are becoming extinct…………We are becoming so desensitized that we are letting websites shape our feelings…………….Instead of calling your friends and sharing the news of your break-up you would much rather change your status message……………..

While I may be extremely techno savvy and love adopting technology as it changes; when it comes to love I am an old-fashioned girl at heart…….I would much rather get a real card as opposed to an e-card……………Much rather hold hands at a coffee shop than get poked on facebook……………… I’d much rather get real flowers than a virtual bouquet……………
