TRYST WITH DESTINY ??

Patriotism means a different thing to different people: to me it means action. Watching patriotic movies twice a year does not a patriot make. We need to stand up and deserve the independence our forefathers won for us. People gave up their lives with a smile so that their descendants could enjoy life in a free India. An India where every person is free; each one has a chance to live and succeed equally.

The question remains; are we really free? Does the poor blue collared daily wager have the same rights and liberties as an affluent stock broker? Can we freely express our rights without fear of repercussions? We have enjoyed freedom for 62 years; but are we truly at a position to feel pride in the way we have treated “freedom”? Somewhere down the years Indians have lost the zeal to make this country the number one nation in the world………….Where is the pride that people felt when Pandit Nehru unfurled the Indian flag for the first time in free India…..?……………Where are the promises people made to return India’s lost glory?……….What I believe the Indian youth today lacks is the sheer pride to be an Indian; the same pride our forefathers felt while willingly dying to give us a free land…………….A land to call ours……………We should be proud of our nation……………..A nation that earned it freedom…………..A nation that has one of the largest armies in the world……………….A nation that gives the world one of the largest numbers of doctors, engineers, scientists and architects………………..We need to remind our people that India is not only about poverty and corruption……………It’s not about what you saw in Slumdog Millionaire……………….. India is not just the metros; but also the villages where farmers toil day and night to contribute towards 70% of our economy……………..

When we speak about patriotism people assume only if you enter the armed forces you can be a true patriot. That is not true……………Yes we do need more young people to serve the nation…………..But we also need youngsters to enter politics, healthcare, charitable services……………..Even small gestures like keeping our streets clean can contribute towards a much bigger picture…………

Every 5 years we hear big promises by our leaders and when they fail to deliver we complain for the 5 years to come………….What we must ask ourselves is that why have we chosen them? We have seen the past records; is it not high time to make better choices?……………

It is time for us to stop talking and start sweating; we cannot fail. We must not forget; we need this country just as much as it needs us.
